Congratulations to the two winners of the 2011 Fujifilm Shorts competition.
The Best Film award went to 13½, while DP Urszula Pontikos’ work on The Pit won the Best Cinematography prize. .

13½ is the tale of a young girl, Aphrodite, who falls in love with an older boy named Lou. Shot on location in modern-day Greece, 13½ is a rite of passage story dealing with Aphrodite’s perilous road to adulthood.
The Pit tells the story of a young boy’s encounter with a reclusive elderly man. Set in a desolate rural landscape, The Pit is a poignant film that challenges the viewer’s initial preconceptions.
The judging panel was: Olivier Kaempfer - Producer/Writer/Director, Maggie Ellis - Film London, Bruce Webb – Director, Angus Hudson - Director of Photography, Tom Townend - Director of Photography, Flemming Jetmar - Director of Photography and Born Shorts, Alan Lowne - British Cinematographer Magazine, Joe Bateman - Rushes Soho Shorts Festival, Tom Vaughan - Future Shorts, Matt Adams - Technicolor and Jerry Deeney – Fujifilm Motion Picture.
Olivier Kaempfer paid this tribute to the winner of the Best Film award: “I think 13½ is about as close to a faultless short film as you can get. It looks beautiful, it tells a bold story and it really sticks in the memory. Well done to Haris Vafeiadis who wrote and directed the film, together with producer Yiannis Exindaris and DP Edu Grau for completing such a fine work.”
Maggie Ellis said of The Pit, which won Best Cinematography prize: "The Pit is a beautifully realised piece of work. Ula loves 'big' cinematography, framing people and landscapes in a skillful and deceptively effortless way which is in complete synergy with the narrative. She has that great combination of creative vision and impressive technical knowledge which reveals itself in her confident photography."
